Probiotics
Are they what they are cracked up to be?
Natural health Organics recently looked into the world
of Probiotics to find some interesting information that cause us some
concern. We had been looking for a good probiotic to put into our health
food range and these are some if the findings.
Most probiotics are cultured from Dairy and our research if starting
to lead towards the fact that humans need to get their necessary bacteria
from food, for millions of years this was the only source of friendly
bacteria.
Another interesting find is how the counts are made. Many companies shake
up the bacteria to be able to count them as single units.
Bacteria live in colonies and when consumed go to those areas where they
do the most good, so to keep them in colonies means they are stronger
and working for us, shaking them up is not in their best interest.
Here is one that shocked me.
When a new culture reaches a certain PH all multiplication ceases. There
is a practice of altering the PH so the bacteria recommence multiplying,
this only weakens the bacteria but is does make for higher counts, dead
or alive.
While searching through the shelves of foods with Probiotics I was concerned
by the number of products that not only had sugar but also colorings flavorings
and other additives. This is not what probiotic foods should be about
so we looked further.
Many Probiotics come in capsules, tablets or mixed with a processed foods
or yogurt. We have found the best way to keep the bacteria alive is to
have them living in the very food they were cultured from.
Many probiotics are in products that contain Gluten, not a good thing
for the gluten intolerant especially anyone with Coelic Disease.
After many years of searching we have found a probiotic food
that has managed to do the following.
- A probiotic that is 100% cultured from food. (Not Dairy)
- A company that allows the bacteria to be counted in colonies. (Every batch
has a lab report with the number of colony forming units. CFU)
- A company that does not chase higher numbers by playing with the PH levels
of the cultures. (This leads to stronger and more viable strains)
- A probiotic that is Sugar, Dairy free, with no flavorings, colorings on
any additives.
- The last but not the least important is that the Probiotic food we found
has the living Probiotics alive and well in 15 different foods.
Even better is all the foods are Certified Gluten Free so it is available
for anyone who is gluten intolerant. (Contains Zero Gluten)

The foods are fermented?.
What difference does this make you may ask.
Well if you ferment cabbage you get 20 times the amount of viable Vitamin
C.
Sauerkraut is a good example, sailors who ate sauerkraut many years ago
did not suffer from scurvy.
Imagine the difference a product could make if it had 22 Organically Certified
Fermented foods.
